For "Whitebread and Goatman," there was literally no one behind the
camera...no cameraman, no grips, no gaffers, no script supervisor, no
catering, no nothing. The only people on the set for the entire shoot were
the two actors on screen. Each angle was lit and framed by director/actor
Steve Hosford – and because the piece was shot digitally, the tape was
allowed to just roll in camera as the two actors ran the scene over and
over. When the tape spooled out, the angle was changed, a fresh tape was
inserted, and the scene was run again. At the end of it all, well over
three-and-a-half hours of footage had to be whittled down in editing (which
took 6 months) to less than 7 minutes of screen time. Needless to say, this
is NOT the most efficient way to shoot a film.
